Geometry Hunt

In our Geometry maths lessons this term we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes, and lines of symmetry.

For our final lesson we decided to test how much we have learnt. We went exploring around school, and took photos of interesting things. Then we labelled them with maths information!

The Princess and the Pea

Last week in literacy, we looked at the story of The Princess and the Pea. We  got to know the story really well, so we decided to tell it in some different ways.

We used drama, and some ipad apps to help us!

Our Fairy Tale Village

In DT this term we had a huge project to complete...Our own Fairy Tale Village!

First we worked in pairs to choose a Fairy Tale building and plan how we could make it. Next we formed the structure using junk modelling materials, then we papier-mached it to make it stronger. After that we painted the background colours, then added some finishing touches! Finally Mrs Boultbee helped us put our village together.

We made:

• The Three Little Pigs Houses
• Cinderella's Palace
• Grandma's Cottage
• Jack's Beanstalk and the Giant's Castle
• Rapunzel's Tower
• The 7 Dwarfs House

The True Story of The Three Little Pigs

This week in literacy we have been looking at the book "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" as told to Jon Scieszka. It tells the story from a different point of view-The Wolf's! To start with we were all convinced he was the bad guy, but after reading the book we weren't so sure...


After reading the book we decided to hold our own interviews to get to the bottom of things. Green and Purple groups worked in threes to interview each other...

Rapunzel Science Investigation

In our science work we have been thinking about materials.

Last week we decided that glass wasn't a good material for a shoe, so we designed some new shoes for Cinderella to wear to the ball.

This week we focused on Rapunzel, and whether hair is a good material for climbing up a tower. This led to a discussion on which type of thread is the strongest. We designed an investigation to compare washing line, cotton, silk embroidery thread, wool and ribbon.  First we attached a thread to the handle of a bucket, then we added a weight to the bucket and lifted it for 10 seconds. If there were no problems we changed the weight for a heavier one and repeated it. We kept doing this until the thread broke, or we ran out of weights! Then we recorded the heaviest weight that we had successfully lifted. We repeated this for each type of thread.

Finally we compared our results. Some of us were very surprised! We definitely all agreed that we had enjoyed investigating, we're planning more fairytale science for the next few lessons!

The Three Little Pigs-Storytelling

Today in literacy we continued our work on the Three Little Pigs. Today we worked as a team to design a storymap to help us tell the story, we made sure to include some connectives from yesterday's work.

Then we worked in groups to practice telling the story, with actions, using our storymap. Finally, each group performed the story for the rest of the class.

Tomorrow we will be using our storymaps to help us write the story!

The Three Little Pigs

This week in literacy we are focusing on the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Today we started to get to know the story, reay for writing our own versions on Thursday. We decided to act out the story in different ways. Orange group worked with Mrs Boultbee to act out the story, the other children worked in their animal groups on the ipads. They used the Puppet Pals app to create their own cartoon version of the story.

Our Fairy Tale Ball

Last week was a fabulous week. We did some of our best work so far this year. Then at the end of the week we had our Fairy Tale Ball!

We had all been looking forward to the Ball, and it didn't disappoint! We spent the morning preparing. We made decorations, crafted beautiful invitations, had waltzing lessons with Mrs Treadwell, made Jack's Bean Stew and decorated Gingerbread Men to look like fairy tale characters.

Finally, after lunch, it was time to get ready for the Ball. We all changed into our outfits, popped outside for a quick photoshoot then headed for the Ballroom!

At the Ball we got to show off our new dance moves! Mrs Savage and Mrs Treadwell both popped in, and were very impressed! Then we sat down for a fabulous banquet!As well as the food we had prepared, the Diamonds class had decorated fairy cakes and prepared chocolate apples (Much better than the poisoned apple from Snow White!)

Local Walk

Last week in topic work we looked at different types of homes and buildings. To use what we had learnt, we went out in groups to have a look around Albert Village and see how many different types we could find!

It was very interesting, and we had a lovely time...

The Jolly Postman

This week in literacy we are looking at one of my favourite books-The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg!

Today we started by helping the postman deliver the letters to each of the fairytale characters. We soon found that each character had a job for us to do; we made magic potions, played games, matched shoes, scared wolves and other tasks!
