Meg and Mog Stories

In literacy we have been reading lots of the "Meg and Mog" stories by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski. We looked carefully at the structure of the stories and realised that there is normally an opening, then a problem, then Meg does a spell which tends to make the problem worse and finally there is a resolution or an ending. We also looked at the similarities and differences between each story.

We then used what we had learned to plan our own stories about Meg and Mog (and Owl!) Finally, last week we used our planning sheets to write and illustrate our own picture books. Today we took out books over to the Nursery and read them to the children there. It was really nice for us to share our work, and we hope that they enjoyed hearing our stories.

Christmas with the Aliens

Last week we finally got to perform our nativity play "Christmas with the Aliens." We have been working hard for weeks rehearsing for the show, and it all paid off! We completed two fabulous performances on Wednesday, as well as a great dress rehearsal for the school on Tuesday. 

Well done to all the children for their hard work, and thank you to the parents for all the support.

Magic Show

As our topic this half term has been "Monsters and Magic" we thought it would be nice to have a magic show for the children. 

Luckily Mr. Taylor offered to help us out, with his fabulous assistant Samuel. We all really enjoyed the show, and were amazed by the tricks!

Our Magic Box Poems

In Literacy we have been looking at the poem "The Magic Box" by Kit Wright...

The Magic Box

Kit Wright

I will put in the box
the swish of a silk sari on a summer night,
fire from the nostrils of a Chinese dragon,
the tip of a tongue touching a tooth.

I will put in the box
a snowman with a rumbling belly
a sip of the bluest water from Lake Lucerne,
a leaping spark from an electric fish.

I will put into the box
three violet wishes spoken in Gujarati,
the last joke of an ancient uncle,
and the first smile of a baby.

I will put into the box
a fifth season and a black sun,
a cowboy on a broomstick
and a witch on a white horse.

My box is fashioned from ice and gold and steel,
with stars on the lid and secrets in the corners.
Its hinges are the toe joints of dinosaurs.

I shall surf in my box
on the great high-rolling breakers of the wild Atlantic,
then wash ashore on a yellow beach
the colour of the sun.

We really enjoyed the poem, so we have worked hard to write our own versions. We then recorded them for you to enjoy at home!

Writer of the Week 26.11.12

This week's Writer of the Week is...

Luke!

Luke has worked really hard to improve his handwriting and presentation, which is now looking fabulous! He also thought really hard about where to put his full stops and capital letters. He has written a lovely, but sad, letter from Puff the Magic Dragon to his missing friend Jackie Paper.

Writers of the Weeks

Writer of the Week is...

Bethany!

Bethany retold the story of "The Gruffalo" with loads of detail, she even added her own wow words and descriptions to an already fabulous story. She also worked really hard to include a range of punctuation.

Writer of the Week is...

Jack!

Jack has really improved his writing by sounding out words to help his spelling,  He retold the story of "Where the Wild Things Are" with lots of detail. He even had a go at organising his writing using paragraphs.

Gruffalo Day

A couple of weeks ago, in literacy we were focusing on the story of "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson.

We really enjoyed reading the story, acting it out, and even rewriting it for ourselves! We had so much fun that we decided to have a Gruffalo Day...

During the day we completed lots of different activities, including:

• Hunting for the characters from the story
• Drawing and colouring
• Making clay models of the Gruffalo
• Decorating Gruffalo cakes

But my favourite was definitely tasting the cakes at the end of the day! We really had a fabulous day, here are some photos to help us remember it...

Maps-Symbols and Keys

Part of our topic this term is geography-maps and plans. 

Today we played a game to learn about symbols and keys on maps. Then we used what we had learnt to create our own maps of the island from "Where the Wild Things Are"

Halloween Disco

We had a great time at the Halloween Disco on Friday Night. There were fabulous costumes, fun games and amazing dance moves!
