George Saves the World by Lunchtime

This week in literacy we read the book "George Saves the World by Lunchtime."
George Saves the World by Lunchtime
It is all about saving the world using the 4 Rs: Recycling, Reusing, Repairing and Reducing. We also looked at explanation texts, then planned our own explanation for how George saved the world. Here we are performing our explanation:

On Monday we will be writing our explanations.

The Princess and the Pea

Last week in literacy, we looked at the story of The Princess and the Pea. We  got to know the story really well, so we decided to tell it in some different ways.

We used drama, and some ipad apps to help us!

The True Story of The Three Little Pigs

This week in literacy we have been looking at the book "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" as told to Jon Scieszka. It tells the story from a different point of view-The Wolf's! To start with we were all convinced he was the bad guy, but after reading the book we weren't so sure...

After reading the book we decided to hold our own interviews to get to the bottom of things. Green and Purple groups worked in threes to interview each other...

The Three Little Pigs-Storytelling

Today in literacy we continued our work on the Three Little Pigs. Today we worked as a team to design a storymap to help us tell the story, we made sure to include some connectives from yesterday's work.

Then we worked in groups to practice telling the story, with actions, using our storymap. Finally, each group performed the story for the rest of the class.

Each group did a fabulous job, as you can see in the videos below...

Tomorrow we will be using our storymaps to help us write the story!

The Three Little Pigs

This week in literacy we are focusing on the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Today we started to get to know the story, reay for writing our own versions on Thursday. We decided to act out the story in different ways. Orange group worked with Mrs Boultbee to act out the story, the other children worked in their animal groups on the ipads. They used the Puppet Pals app to create their own cartoon version of the story.

The Jolly Postman

This week in literacy we are looking at one of my favourite books-The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg!

Today we started by helping the postman deliver the letters to each of the fairytale characters. We soon found that each character had a job for us to do; we made magic potions, played games, matched shoes, scared wolves and other tasks!

Here are some photos of our letter deliveries...

Iggy Peck, Architect

Today we read a great book-Iggy Peck, Architect.

It is all about a boy who dreams of becoming an architect. In the book he creates models out of unusual items, including a tower made out of nappies!

At the end of the story he saves his teacher and his whole class by designing a bridge to escape from an island!

We were so inspired by the book that we did lots of exciting activities...
  • We drew our own designs of buildings made from food
  • We thought about our dream jobs
  • We created buildings using only spaghetti and marshmallows
  • We painted our own blueprints
What a busy day!

Leave a comment about the book, or about our activities today.

Save the Rainforest!

During thelast week of our topic we have been learning about the destruction of the world's rainforests. We have thought about why they are in danger, why it is so important to save them, and some ideas of how to save them!

As we are now expert film-makers, we decided to make some "Save the Rainforest" news stories/adverts.

Here they are for you to watch at home...

Jungle Day Films

We all had a fabulous time at our "Jungle Day" last Friday, and all looked fabulous in our jungle explorers gear!

During the day we worked in groups to plan, film and edit our own films. We used our school nature area as our filming location-it made a great rainforest for the day!

We also made our own cheesy snakes, and looked at some tropical fruits, which we made into fruit kebabs.  Emre had also baked some delicious monkey cakes for the whole class! It worked out well because after filming in the sunshine we were ready for a delicious jungle picnic!

Here are our jungle films, and a slides how of "behind the scenes" photos from our day!

Our Rainforest Poems

In literacy this week we have been busy reading, planning and creating acrostic poems.

For our own poems we used either the word "Jungle", or "Rainforest." First we thought of as many words and phrases as we could to describe the rainforest-using everything we have learnt so far. Then we used these ideas to form lines for our poems. Once we were happy with our first drafts we wrote them again on special Jungle paper! Finally we recorded ourselves reading our poems, so that people can enjoy them at home!

Let us know what you think of our Rainforest/Jungle Poems...

Our Rainforest Picture Books

Last week in literacy we were inspired by the book "Where the Forest meets the Sea" by Jeannie Baker. It is all about a boys real, and imaginary journey through the Australian rainforest.

We really enjoyed the book, and found it very though provoking, especially the ending where the boy wonders what will happen to the rainforest in the future.

We decided to focus on using all our senses to imagine and describe our own journey through the rainforest.

As we were so impressed by the illustrations in the original book, we decided to use the ipads to create our own picture books, with words and illustrations. They took a while to complete, but they were definitely worth it!

Click on the names below to read that child's book. We are very proud of our work, so please let us know what you think!

London Video Guides

On Friday afternoon we decided to make video guides to London using Microsoft Photostory.

First we searched for images of London on Google, and saved them. Next we imported our favourite images to Photostory, we sequenced them and added some captions. Finally, some groups recorded their own narration to explain the sights of the city!

Great Fire of London Films

As we are reaching the end of our history work on the Great Fire of London, we decided to show what we have learnt by creating some films.

We worked together in groups, using the ipads to create our films. Some groups chose to use imovie, and some used toontastic to create animated films.

Here are some of the finished products. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them!

Samuel Pepys

This week in literacy we are continuing our work on recounts, and in history we are learning about Samuel Pepys and his diary.

Today we made video diaries to recount the events of The Great Fire of London from Samuel Pepys' point of view. They were very dramatic!

Great Fire of London recounts

Last week, in literacy, we took our knowledge of The Great Fire of London and used it to plan, perform and eventually write our own recounts of the events.

Mystery Landing Storytelling- Part 2

After creating our class story about the landing in our playground, we looked at the underlying plot;
  • Opening-Hear a mysterious crash
  • Build-Up-Find something unusual
  • Problem-Need to fix or change the mysterious object
  • Resolution-The main character saves the day
  • Ending-Everything goes back to normal, until...
We then used this plot to innovate and create a new class story. This time we used  a story mountain to plan the basic plot. Then children worked in groups to plan, create and perform a section of the story. We then videoed the performances and put them together to see the whole story...

On Thursday and Friday we used the same basic, underlying plot to plan and write our own mystery landing stories. Look out for them coming soon!

Mystery Landing-Our Class Story

This has been a very exciting week, beginning with the mystery landing in the playground!

After being journalists for the day on Monday, we decided we wanted a break from non-fiction writing. We used our imaginations to plan, create and perform a class story about what could have landed in our playground. Here it is for you to enjoy!
