Maths Investigations

Last week in maths we did a lot of number work, we made numbers using place value, we partitioned numbers, and we looked at odd and even numbers. To finish our work for the week we completed some investigations.

Half the class investigated different tubes of Smarties. First they sorted the Smarties according to their colour, next they counted how many there were of each colour. Then they recorded their findings, and thought about whether each group of Smarties was odd or even. Finally they compared their findings with other groups. We were all very surprised to find out how different each tube was!

The other half the class used dominoes to find out more about odd and even numbers. First they sorted the dominoes into groups depending whether both halves were odd, even, or a mixture. Then they added the halves together to find out what happens when we add different combinations of odd and even numbers.  Finally they recorded their findings.

  1. A question to the dominoes group:
What happens if you add 2 odd numbers? why does this happen?

A question to the smarties group:
Did all tubes of smarties have the same number of smarties? If not what was the variance(difference) between the largest number and smallest?

  2. Kia Ora,

We are lucky enough to be off until 2 February, as this is our longest holidays and it is summer too. When we start we will being with statistics(maths). Could we get in touch and find out what are your students favourite smarties are and compare them to our class?
